Why is this happening?
Because the interprocessor communication links that Opterons have, based on ccHTT (Cache Coherent HyperTransport Technology), scale nearly linearly, allow multiple processors to have their own memory that is shared to any other processor by direct links.
Intel's bus technology is hopeless.
But these things have a dinamics of their own, with the presumed superior Woodcrests, and the upcoming clovertowns, this is the chance for the Intel lovers to sneak some systems into the top supercomputers list.

The best of the work that I have done has been in computing centers like that.
Now, a bit of difficulty: I tried to confirm that KanBalam is Opteron based (or any technical information, for that matter) and came empty handed.
